ABOUT

GARDEN LEVEL

Led by two Jewish women, Dinah Rokhinson and Haley Fragen, Garden Level Theatre Co. is a grassroots arts laboratory. We seek to merge the needs of both artist and audience to create a core of shared authorship. Garden Level came forth as an outlet to channel Dinah and Haley’s shared and individual creative values into fully realized productions, whilst supporting and cultivating an intimate community of artists and spectators. Working on a project to project basis, GLTC provides emerging artists with an opportunity to hold themselves accountable for the development of their own creative visions. Since its inception in June 2022, Garden Level has demonstrated an ability to adapt form to content. GLTC continues to interrogate and experiment with artistic storytelling rooted in authenticity, urgency, and radical accessibility.

MISSION STATEMENT

Garden Level Theatre Co. is a grassroots artistic laboratory that breaks storytelling conventions of form and content to harness the empathetic power of innovative and accessible art built for the moment.

8 core values

  • We are committed to breaking the form of traditional organizational structures and storytelling. Drawing inspiration from the success and wide-reach of internet streaming platforms, we imagine a business structure that innovates and disrupts the very concept of a theater company. We steer away from the current theatrical organizational institution to build a whole new kind of “live arts hub.” Our world expands into an interplay between the live and the virtual, the site specific and the immersive, the interactive and the accessible.

  • We are inspired by today. By right now. By this audience. By this space. By this story. By this world. We create work built for today. For right now. For this audience. For this space. For this story. For this world.

  • Art that is specifically built for the current moment breeds a core of shared authorship. This work lives for the audience and creators in the space at the moment that they are a part of that space. Each audience member, actor, crew, and creative brings with themselves their own personal signature, the resulting piece becomes a co-authored production on which each and every person leaves a lasting imprint.

  • The time, efforts, and energy of each and every artist and patron involved in Garden Level are honored with respect and care. We strive for each and every artist to feel their work is valued by Garden Level and reflect that value through fair practices in work processes and compensation. Built into the Garden Level process is an environmentally conscious mindset, a respect for each person’s humanity, and an eager curiosity for the deep history of wherever and whenever we are working.

  • Innovative accessibility lies at the forefront of our work. We cultivate a space that provides as many people as possible with a pathway into the work. We view accessibility not as an inconvenience, an afterthought, or a problem to be solved. We eagerly welcome the possibilities, and are invigorated by the vast options of storytelling that we can explore as we prioritize physical, emotional, and financial accessibility in our work.

  • We view inclusivity as opportunity. Garden Level Theatre Co. strives to create art with an accessibility of form and content. We invite people of all backgrounds and experiences to find in Garden Level not only a sense of belonging, but a hub and community with which to participate. We share stories that represent a breadth of identities and access empathy and understanding through the sharing of experiences.

  • Garden level facilitates compassionate connection as a means of community healing. We create spaces for the community to feel held, to feel welcome, to grieve and to celebrate joy.

  • The greatest superpower of live art is the ability to generate deep and authentic empathy through intimate human connection and storytelling, and we harness this power to its fullest potential. We strongly believe that when hope feels lost, it can always be found in live arts.
